KYC Verification at Canadian Online Casinos: What Is Checked and Why
Every licensed online casino in Canada has to confirm who its customers are before real money can be withdrawn, and in most cases before the first deposit. The process is usually called KYC, short for “know your customer”, and it is a legal requirement rather than a choice made by the operator.
What is checked
Operators verify three things: that the player is a real person, that they are of legal age in their province, and that they are physically located where the licence applies. Identity is confirmed with a government document such as a driver’s licence or passport, and address with a utility bill or bank statement. Many sites now use an automated match against credit bureau records, so a document upload is only requested when the automatic check fails.
Location checks
Because licences are provincial, an Ontario operator may only accept play from inside Ontario. Geolocation software confirms the device position at login and periodically during play. Using a VPN to appear elsewhere is a breach of the terms and normally leads to the account being closed and winnings withheld.
Why withdrawals get delayed
The most common reason for a held withdrawal is an incomplete verification: a blurred document, a mismatch between the registered name and the payment method, or an address that differs from the one on file. Completing the checks before the first withdrawal request avoids most of these delays.
Verification also protects players: it stops someone else from opening an account in their name and makes it possible to enforce self-exclusion across operators.
